    Holbrook Armistice Commemoration

    9th November 2018

We are so appreciative of the support we received from the village and the academy. The evening was a great success with many, many people commenting both on the moving contemporary local letters we heard and the fascinating accounts of how the war changed life in the nation - and village - for ever.

It was punctuated throughout by songs of the time from Vivo choir. The story of one girl’s journey from poverty and illegitimacy through to becoming a highly respected village headmistress was inspiring: all made possible by changes in both education law after 1918 and in attitudes to women.

The evening concluded with WW1 stories researched and read by pupils from the academy, who then reflected on what the stories meant to them and what they had learned for the future.

A total of £333.45 was collected to be divided between the fund for updating the war memorial and SSAFA.

Holbrook village was still celebrating a fantastic Open Gardens event on Thursday, 2nd July when £3449 was handed over to two important causes: St Elizabeth Hospice and Friends of All Saints Church. The cheques were handed over to Fiona Ginn of St Elizabeth Hospice and Rev Geoffrey Clement, Rector of Holbrook, by Holbrook Society, which organised the event.

This remarkable sum was a just reward for the unstinting work done by Holbrook gardeners. Twelve remarkably varied and beautiful gardens were opened to the public on June 14th – as well as the church tower: a rare opportunity to get a bird’s-eye view of the village. But of, perhaps, even greater value, was the camaraderie and cheerful good humour which pervaded the village, convincing us that, on a grey day, the sun was, in fact, shining!

More Holbrook Society events are in the pipeline, and you will hear about those soon.
